As the “Second Season” of spring touring begins in the PNW, come out to the last race of the “first season” at Crystal Mountain. Enjoy racing (hopefully) in the sun up and down the slopes in the shadow of Mount Rainier. As our series comes to an end, we will be having our largest post race party of the year on Crystal’s sundeck. Series Awards will be presented to those who were competing all season long.
Race Category will consist of two loops, while the Recreational Category will do two shorten loops (cutting out the bootpack up to the top of Chair 6). Each Category will have a Heavy Mettle Division for those with “non race gear”, i.e more typical backcountry touring gear. To qualify for the Heavy Mettle Division, you must be racing on “frame bindings” (Marker Tour F12, Salomon Guardian, Fritschi Freeride, etc) or a splitboard.
The Race Category will descend some double black diamond and off-piste runs, so race participants need to be comfortable navigating this terrain. Depending on conditions, the course will have a steep bootpack as well. The Recreation Category will be challenging terrain, but not quite expert, and cut out the bootpack.
The full course will be confirmed once the resort is open and we can take a run through with Crystal Mountain Patrol to determine the specific routes. We will announce once we have the confirmed route, but here’s the general layout:
The route will switchback up through Lower Ferks, cross Middle Ferks, and head up Wally’s Way. We’ll ascend K2 Face with some steep bootpacking and top off at the summit of Silver Queen (top of Chair 6). Some expert skiing back down to the lower mountain will take us to the Lower Arwine’s run and cruise on in to the base area. Each lap will be approximately 2,500’, and there will be two laps. In future years we are planning a route to have two separate laps.
The route will be the same as the Race Course, except at the transition near K2 Face from skinning to booting, the Rec Course will turn around and down down from there. This will cut out any steep bootpacking and expert skiing terrain and also approximately 1,000’, making each loop 1,500’. Rec Course will also do two laps.

Race Category: $55 ($10 increase on Mar 17)
Recreation Category: $45 ($10 increase on Mar 17)

Crystal Mountain requires all racers to have a lift ticket. They are offering discounted lift tickets for $50 (available for purchase during registration) for all racers without a season’s pass. Pass will be valid all day of the race, so feel free to get some skiing in the afternoon after the race!
The race staff reserves the right to delay, alter, or cancel the start based on snow, weather, and safety conditions.
Race takes place at an operational ski resort. All racers will yield to resort guests and adhere to the skier Responsibility Code. Racers will comply with any directions issued by the ski area staff or race officials.
Racers are required to stay within 5′ of the established skin track on the uphill portions. During downhill portions, racers will stay with 30′ of course markings.
Transitions must occur within the marked off transition area.
Racers agree to equipment checks before, during, and after the event.
If opt to not finish the race, you MUST check in with the timing staff to know you’ve left the course. Otherwise we will begin calling your emergency contacts and worrying them!
Any transgression of a rule will result in a time penalty or DQ at the discretion of the race staff.
Racers should be prepared for variable weather including but not limited to snow, high winds and cold temperatures.
